Science
Science is all around us. It affects our everyday lives and we are constantly interacting with it in its different forms. This importance is reflected in its status as a core subject at Primary level. Throughout their school life at St Agatha’s, children learn about a wide variety of scientific areas, from animal habitats to electricity and from chemical change to the solar system.
In the Early Years/Foundation Stage, children get exposure to scientific ideas through the Understanding the World section of the Early Learning Goals. Here children take part in activities that help them to understand the world around them and are not taught Science specifically as a subject.
When in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, children are taught during dedicated Science lessons that form a compulsory part of the curriculum. Through these lessons, Science is taught as one overarching subject, rather than as its separate constituents of physics, biology and chemistry. Across the Key Stages, children receive a balance of each area in their lessons.
In terms of teaching and learning, Science at St Agatha’s is taught through a wide range of knowledge objectives and scientific enquiry skills. Children receive a grounding in the factual basis of science, then use skills to apply and test their knowledge by conducting experiments.
There are a variety of ways in which you could support your child in their Science learning:
* Richmond Park: The Richmond Park Information Centre, which is located adjacent to the car park at Pembroke Lodge, often has information about events for children.
* The world-renowned Science Museum – London
* Brooklands Museum, aircraft and motoring – Weybridge
* The Royal Observatory and Planetarium, Greenwich - London
* The Museum at the Royal Institution, lots of different types - London
* Wellcome Collection - London
* Kirkaldy Testing Museum – London
