At St Agatha’s, we have a vision of languages as a ‘lifelong skill to be used in business and for pleasure, to open up avenues of communication and to promote, encourage and instil a broader cultural understanding”.
We believe that learning a foreign language is a “liberation from insularity” and through learning Spanish, the children explore Spanish and Hispanic culture and draw comparisons to their own. This provides an opportunity to understand, appreciate and celebrate diversity and promote respect and tolerance of others.

The children start learning Spanish in Y2 and are taught by our Spanish speaking teacher, Ms Humanes. They are encouraged to have a growth mind-set and to be risk takers. The children discover that learning a foreign language is interesting and fun. Lessons are fast paced and interactive, with an age appropriate balance of spoken and written language, encouraging all children to participate and have a go.  By making links and drawing similarities between Spanish and the language(s) they speak, the children are motivated and excited in lessons.

Every September (as part of European Day of Languages), we hold a Languages Day to further promote language learning and help the children to develop an international outlook.

Every year, we welcome Spanish teacher trainees from the University of Barcelona, to work with us in class. We also have a link school, El Roque, in La Palma (Canary Islands), who we carry out joint activities with, including learning and performing a Christmas Carol in the foreign language!
MFL at St Agatha’s ensures that the children leave us with a firm foundation in Spanish, equipping them to continue their study of languages in secondary school and inspiring a lifelong love of languages.
