St Agatha’s Calculation Policy has been written according to the National Curriculum 2014 and it outlines both the mental and written methods that should be taught from Year 1 to Year 6. The document builds on the interconnectedness of mathematics and shows the progression for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Formal written methods will be introduced to the children using concrete apparatus e.g. place value counters etc. which ensure children have an understanding of the underlying concept.
Children are encouraged to look at a calculation and decide whether it can be done mentally, mentally with a jotting or whether it needs a written method.
